Recycling Week 2011
Our Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan launched Recycling Week 2011 on 4 June 2011 at Tampines Central, in conjunction with World Environment Day (5 June 2011). Recycling Week 2011 was organised by NEA in partnership with the Public Waste Collectors, Town Councils, National Library Board (NLB), the People’s Association, schools and grassroots organisations. A series of activities, were organised between 4 – 11 June to spread the 3R message such as story-telling at NLB libraries and MediaCorp’s car boot sale at Marina Square. Three community outreach events were held at Toa Payoh Central, Bukit Batok East Point and Chong Pang Community Club on 11 June 2011 to wrap up Recycling Week.

Veolia ES Singapore, the PWC for the Pasir Ris-Tampines sector, launched its on-line recycling reward programme, Grow your Recycling Incentives Now (GRIN) for residents in the sector. The programme aims to encourage recycling participation by awarding GRIN points for recyclables that residents put into the recycling bins. The recycling bins are tagged with RFID (Radio-frequency identification) chips to identify the households, and the recyclables are weighed automatically when unloaded into the collection vehicles. The reward points are credited automatically to the account of each household and the accumulated points can be used to redeem gift items using Veolia’s web portal.

A new recycling bin label, containing pertinent information on the National Recycling Programme, was also showcased through a standardised blue recycling bin at the event. The new label would be attached to recycling bins from 1 July 2011 in the Pasir Ris-Tampines sector, and rolled out progressively to the other eight sectors to enable easier identification of recycling bins and encourage proper usage of the bins.
