Celebrating 40 Years of Singapore’s Clean and Green Journey!

Clean and Green Singapore 2010 was successfully launched at HortPark on 30 Oct 09. In addition to being the 20th Clean & Green campaign since its inception in 1990, this year also marks the 40th year of Singapore’s Clean and Green journey.

To promote an appreciation of our environmental transformation over the last 40 years and provide a vision of a quality living environment of the future, visitors attending the event were treated to a gallery-styled photo exhibition of major milestones and policies from 1960s to the present. The exhibition ended with a challenge from Minister Mentor, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, to future generation: -

“Clean and green Singapore has stirred other countries to achieve good public hygiene, clean air and waters. Our ABC Waters Programme will turn concrete monsoon drains and canals into streams. The whole island has been sewered up, so only clean rainwater will flow into our drains and canals. In 10 years, Singapore will have many waterways and park connectors, creating more recreational areas and an aesthetic environment. Future generations must keep this city beautiful, distinctive.”

In addition to the exhibition, visitors also throng the Green Product Fair, which was packed with more than 30 booths of environmentally friendly products selling at attractive prices.

As testimonial to our drive to be Green, a total of 16,000 aluminium cans and plastic bottles were recycled over the 3-day carnival. More than 15,000 used banners were given a new lease of life when they were collected and transformed into banner bags that were highly sought after.

The three-day carnival drew a crowd of 22,000 people from all walks of life. We hope that all our visitors can now better appreciate how far we have come to achieve a clean & green Singapore. Together, let’s make our world the most beautiful home.
