LGA is the first large-scale green collaboration by DFS, South West CDC, NEA (SWRO) and SEC, involving 109 preschools and up to 12,000 young children between ages of 3 and 6 in the South West district. Lasting for three months, (from 21 April 2011 to 30 June 2011), this initiative celebrates Earth Day and aims to inculcate good green habits in children from a young age. Preschoolers are encouraged to reduce their plastic bag usage by refusing unnecessary plastic bags or using reusable bags when purchasing groceries with their parents. All 796 DFS outlets in Singapore including Giant, Cold Storage, Market Place, Shop N Save, 7-Eleven and Guardian Health & Beauty are involved in this initiative.

Each preschooler at all participating schools will be given a passbook. One sticker will then be given for every transaction where use of plastic bags is reduced or refused. For every 25 stickers collected, a bag of basic essentials worth $25 will be raised for a low-income family from the South West district.

The launch also kick-started a “Green” shopping by 80 preschoolers from PCF Ayer Rajah-West Coast-Teban Gardens with the 20 beneficiaries from South West district at the Giant Hypermart. Everyone was all smiles as the preschoolers proudly collected their cartoon stickers while the beneficiaries went home with bags full of essentials.
