Launch of Clean & Green Singapore 2012 @ Petir Park Yes I Can! Together Let’s Make A Difference!
The focus for this year’s Clean & Green Singapore (CGS) 2012 is to instil community pride and ownership of the environment, starting with the individual.
The CGS 2012 launch also marked the commencement of the community-led “Keep Singapore Clean” initiative.
The CGS 2012 Carnival, co-organised by the National Environment Agency and the North West Community Development Council (NWCDC), was officially launched on 29 October 2011 by Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Teo Chee Hean at Petir Park.
DPM said, “We should treat public places like our own homes, so that they remain conducive and comfortable for all Singaporeans to enjoy. We should also participate in resident volunteer schemes, where all of us can play our part in promoting environmental messages on anti-littering, energy-saving, dengue-prevention and recycling, among others,” emphasising the importance of individual effort.

To support CGS 2012’s theme of “Let’s Make A Difference”, Mayor of North West District, Dr Teo Ho Pin announced that NWCDC will build the largest green network in the North West District by 2014 as a starting point – with 45 community green clubs and 2,000 volunteers to reach out to 90,000 households. The North West District aims to set up 45 recycling points over the next 3 years through the ‘Recycle @ North West’ programme that focuses on active recycling. Residents will get hands-on experiential learning and be involved in sorting the recyclables. In the process, families, neighbours, young and old, will get a chance to bond and make new friends. Mayor Teo said that this initiative will empower individuals to make a difference in resource conservation that will contribute towards sustainable living.
Geylang Serai, Kreta-Ayer Kim Seng, Pasir Ris East, Woodlands and Yew Tee Constituencies were presented the Best Constituency Ownership Award that recognises constituencies with the most effective community empowerment in achieving environmental and public health outcomes. The Best Community Commitment Award and Best Community Achievement Award go to the North West District and South West District respectively.

‘I-WE’ Journey
The visitors were treated to a very different exhibition this year! Through a survey conducted over the 2-day carnival, many commended the exhibition. Apart from engaging games, there were ‘show and tell’ demonstrations by community volunteers onsite. Eco-messages from NEA, NParks and PUB were integrated, highlighting flagship environmental projects from the 5 districts in Singapore.
Other key carnival highlights include the Recycling Mania, Green Bazaar and Eco-Workshops where participants got to learn how to make soap from used cooking oil, create beautiful art pieces out of discarded drink cans and packaging, and create their own terrariums and rain garden.
The event attracted about 20,000 visitors.
