ECo Day Out 2011 @ South West
23 January 2011 marked the 6th year of the annual district environmental event, “ECo Day Out 2011 @ South West”, which was held at Bukit Batok. Organised by the South West Community Development Council (CDC), the South West Regional Office of the National Environment Agency and Hong Kah North Grassroots Organisations, the event saw strong community participation in the ‘Trash-for-Groceries’ mass recycling drive. Residents were also encouraged to recycle their E-waste and used oil for charity.

The highlight of the day was the launch of South West – SMRT ECo Fund by the Minister for the Environment & Water Resources (MEWR), Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, together with Mayor of South West District and the Minister of State, MEWR, Dr Amy Khor. NEA’s CEO, Mr Andrew Tan, and Advisers, Mr Ang Mong Seng, BBM, Mr Arthur Fong, Mdm Ho Geok Choo and Mr Zaqy Mohamad were also present to witness the launch.
The South West – SMRT ECo Fund, of $50,000, aims to support and facilitate ground-up initiatives from the community and corporate partners in achieving environment and community sustainability under the ECo Plan of South West.

The inaugural South West ECo Awards were presented to Singapore Polytechnic (community category), Nan Hua High School (community category) and SMRT Corporation (corporate category) for their active contribution towards environmental and community sustainability in the South West district.

At the 6th South West District Public Health Awards presentation ceremony, Yuhua Village Market and Food Centre was announced as the winner for the ‘Clean, Dry & Sparkling Public Toilets (for hawker centres) category’ for the 4th consecutive year!
True to its name, the ECo Day Out has succeeded in achieving sustainability in both the Environment and Community!
