CLEAN & GREEN SINGAPORE
The Clean & Green Singapore (CGS) campaign is a nationwide initiative organised by the National Environment Agency (NEA) for the community. The campaign serves as a platform to promote environmental ownership to the general public as well as to showcase and recognise the environmental sustainability efforts by the various organisations in the People, Public and the Private (3P) sector.
The Clean and Green campaign has evolved from a week-long to a year-long campaign that is positioned as a concerted national endeavour, to inspire Singaporeans to adopt an environmentally-friendly lifestyle, since its inception in 1990.
KEY PILLARS OF CGS
The CGS overarching theme of encouraging Singaporeans to lead a Clean and Green lifestyle underscores the importance of promoting sustained behavioural change, and not just raising awareness. 3 key pillars supporting this overarching theme are:
Clean Environment
Provides the basic foundation for a clean & green lifestyle that reinforces public health and pollution issues.
City of Gardens and Water
Provides a visual and emotional connection between people and the environment.
Energy Efficiency and Resource Conservation
Emphasizes the importance of environmental sustainability, which covers energy efficiency, waste minimisation, recycling and water conservation.
In line with the theme of promoting a Clean and Green lifestyle, key environmental initiatives and events, organised by NEA, will be held throughout the year as follows:-
CLEAN AND GREEN SINGAPORE 2012 LAUNCH CEREMONY CUM CARNIVAL
Date: October 2011
The Launch of the annual Clean & Green Singapore Campaign usually held in end October or early November, to kick start a series of environmental initiatives for the following year and is graced by our Prime Minister. Over the years, it has evolved as an excellent platform for the various community groups and our 3P partners to showcase their environmental initiatives and efforts. Last year’s event held at the open field next to Sengkang Square attracted over 30,000 people and we are expecting an event of similar scale and outreach this year. The CGS 2012 Launch will be held in the North West District.
CLEAN AND GREEN SINGAPORE EVENTS AT DISTRICT LEVELS
Date: November 2011 – January 2012
Singapore is divided into 5 Community Development Council (CDC) districts namely Central, North East, North West, South East and South West. Following the CGS 2012 Launch event, the other 4 districts will hold their community-level events for their residents throughout Singapore between November 2011 and January 2012. District CGS events are usually graced by the respective district Mayors and Members of Parliament, which highlights the importance and significance of these community environmental events. These events also attract huge turnout and support from the community.
CLEAN AND GREEN SINGAPORE SCHOOLS’ CARNIVAL
Date: November 2011
The CGS Schools’ Carnival is the biggest environmental event for schools in Singapore. This event is targeted at children and youth from pre-schools to JC / ITE levels. Apart from strong support from the education community (students, teachers, vice/principals), parents also show up to support their children participating at the various competitions held throughout the 2-day carnival event. 230 schools participated in last year’s event, which attracted 10,000 visitors. We expect a similar turnout this year.
RECYCLING WEEK
Date: June 2011
Recycling Week is another CGS event organised with the community in mind. With initiatives such as the Recyclables Exchange Programme, where residents exchange their recyclable items for vouchers or groceries, it is no surprise that it garners huge interest and support from community groups. In fact, the scale of Recycling Week has grown significantly over the years such that, in addition to the main launch event, satellite Recycling Day events are held at the district levels on different days, so more residents can contribute and participate.
NEA SEMAKAU RUN 2011
Date: October 2011
The NEA Semakau Run 2011 at the Semakau Landfill is a platform for businesses to demonstrate their corporate social responsibility towards the environment and the community. A unique charity run on an operational landfill, the event aims to raise funds to support local environmental Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and social service charities in their community outreach programmes. Since 2007, a total of $1,525,000 has been raised through the Runs and have benefitted 8 environmental NGOs and 3 social service charities. Donations pledged for the NEA Semakau Run 2011 are tax-deductible. In addition, donors are acknowledged prominently in the print media and on TV.
